JMG and Maine's community colleges have partnered to offer this exciting workforce training opportunity to JMG students. Train for a high-demand job in less than four weeks!
Additionally, JMG students who graduated high school in 2022 or later are eligible to earn the JMG Maine Career Exploration Badge by successfully completing any of these programs. Students who have already earned the JMG Maine Career Exploration Badge are not eligible to earn it a second time by participating in the 2024 Summer Academy. That means you can earn a $500 academic award while completing this training!
Programs are provided for free in partnership with the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce to help upskill and strengthen Maine's Workforce. Students must be 18 years old in order to qualify for programming.

Culinary Bootcamp
Kennebec Valley Community College
Get introduced to the food service industry and professional cooking. Students will learn basic cooking methods, including simmering, frying, roasting, and grilling. Gain knowledge in kitchen measurements, recipe conversion, kitchen sanitation, and professionalism.

Are you looking to get started in the rapidly growing restaurant industry? The New Cook Bootcamp is an accelerated training that will get you ready for a fast-paced career as a line cook. This hands-on training includes ServSafe Certification as well as an overview of essential skills you will need as you begin your career.

Computer Science and Information Technology Pathway
CompTIA Security+
Central Maine Community College
CompTIA Security+ is the first security certification a candidate should earn. It establishes the core knowledge required of any cybersecurity role and provides a springboard to intermediate-level cybersecurity jobs. Security+ incorporates best practices in hands-on troubleshooting, ensuring candidates have the practical security problem-solving skills required to Assess the security posture of an enterprise environment and recommend and implement appropriate security solutions. Monitor and secure hybrid environments, including cloud and mobile: Operate with an awareness of applicable laws and policies, including principles of governance, risk, and compliance; Identify, analyze, and respond to security events and incidents.

Computer Science and Information Technology Pathway
Introduction to Computer Science and Coding
Eastern Maine Community College
Participants in this two-part computing series will explore the various careers available in computer sciences and engage in an introductory coding boot camp. Employer visits and tours will also be an additional part of the programming.
Introduction to Computer Sciences Careers: Explore the ever-changing field of computer technology in this introductory program. Students will explore career opportunities and be introduced to a variety of areas including systems hardware and software, network design and management and information security. Ideal for those exploring careers in desktop support, network installation and security, cybersecurity, and more!
Computer Coding (Python): This session provides students with an introduction to Python coding. Python is a versatile and beginner-friendly programming language offering a welcoming environment for learning code. Students will learn basic tools and resources needed for coding, learn some basic syntax, variables, and data types, and be introduced to Object-Oriented Programming (OOP).

Health Sciences Pathway
Certified Residential Medication Aide and Personal Support Specialist
Southern Maine Community College
This course aims to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to administer medications safely, accurately, and in compliance with regulations and best practices and to provide personal care at the highest standards in residential care settings. The clinical partner in this program is The Cedars.

Phlebotomy
Central Maine Community College
Students will learn both theory and practical skills in Phlebotomy; theory topics to include working in healthcare, health, and safety, troubleshooting difficult draws, and working with all demographics from neonatal to geriatric patients

Southern Maine Community College
This partnership with NORDX and Maine Health and Southern Maine Community College provides students with classroom training necessary for an entry-level job in Phlebotomy. Theoretical and practical fundamentals will be taught in anatomy, workplace safety, specimen processing and order entry, and other areas. After successfully completing the two weeks of classroom instruction, students will be able to apply for a position with NorDx and will be guaranteed an interview. If they are hired after the two weeks of classroom time, they will be moved directly onto the clinical portion of the program.

Broadband Technician
Central Maine Community College
Build and develop the skills required for entry-level employment as a fiber optic technician. This course covers the fundamental principles of installing, testing, and maintaining FTTx networks properly. Students will learn various methods of splicing, terminating, testing, and commissioning of fiber optic cable. After successfully completing this course students will have the skills necessary to become FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technicians.

Foundations of Machining
York County Community College, Sanford Instructional Site
The Foundations of Machining Training covers the foundational skills that an individual will need to be successful as they transition into a machining role in a manufacturing setting. Topics include, but are not limited to, Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, Blueprint Reading, Layout and CMM, CNC Operations, GD&T, Ethics, Precision Measurement, Math for Manufacturing, and Basic Machine Tools. The course will provide both theory and hands-on learning opportunities.

Industrial Technology and Transportation Pathway
Manufacturing Technician
Southern Maine Community College, Brunswick Campus
Train for a career in ship fitting, pipefitting, and trades at Bath Iron Works. This course covers blueprint reading, hand and power tool operation, oxy cutting, tack welding, material handling, drilling, fastening, and more. Upon successful completion, qualified applicants will be interviewed by Bath Iron Works.
$500 per week attendance incentive.

Trades Bootcamp
Eastern Maine Community College
Participants in the JMG Trades boot camp will engage in a four-week program where they can gain hands-on experience in high-demand trades careers and earn certificates, badges, and/or other credentials. Employer visits and tours will be an additional part of the programming. Students will participate in all three sessions below to explore three different trades career opportunities.
Intro to Automotive Services (July 8-12): This session provides instruction in basic shop safety skills, personal protective equipment, fire safety, and proper use of lift equipment, as well as skill development in oil and fluid changes, basic vehicle maintenance, tire change, mounting and rotation, and other basic service skills. It is designed to prepare trainees for entry-level jobs in automotive service shops, tire shops, and dealerships and introduce pathways to further automotive education and training in the field.

Intro to Plumbing (July 15-19): This session offers foundational skills and theoretical knowledge for plumbing. Learn about piping, fittings, tools, and basic installations through hands-on practical and expert instruction.

Intro to Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Heating: This session will introduce participants to careers in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, and Heating. It will include hands-on workshops related to air conditioning, refrigeration systems, gas and oil-fired burners, heat pumps, and the proper usage of test instruments, gauges, electrical test meters, and more. Employer visits will be scheduled outside of lab times.

Welding
Central Maine Community College
This high-demand field includes jobs in Aerospace, Automotive, Manufacturing, Agriculture, and Construction industries, as well as jobs in the rapidly growing renewable energy sector. The course covers a variety of welding techniques-MIG & TIG welding, industry standard weld joints, print reading, basic metallurgy, sheet metal forming, tube welding, and grinding & polishing.

Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics Pathway
Land Surveying
Central Maine Community College
This 14-hour course focuses on providing a basic understanding of the principles of Land Surveying. Students will participate in classroom instruction and outside, hands-on training. The objective is to prepare students to become Land Survey Technicians in the State of Maine. Successful completion of the course will result in a digital badge, administered through the Workforce Development Program. The course will begin preparing students for the Certified Survey Technician exam, a nationally- recognized surveying credential.

Is this training really free? What is included?
Training is really free and is covered by the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan.
We will also provide room and board (where available), and meals at our campuses so that you can complete the assignments in the allotted time.
If you need transportation, please let us know in the appropriate section of your registration. WE will do our best to accommodate your needs but transportation supports are subject to availability and may not be feasible in all situations.
Can I commute? How do I get there?
The choice to commute is yours! You can have a vehicle on campus if you would like to stay in the dorms. However, if you have reliable transportation and would like to commute back and forth, you can do so. Please indicate your preference on the registration form.
If you need transportation, please let us know in the appropriate section of your registration. We will do our best to accommodate your needs, but transportation support is subject to availability and may not be feasible in all situations.
What immunizations are required?
Maine law requires that all students born after 1956 who are enrolled full or part-time must be immunized against:
- Measles
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Diphtheria/Tetanus
Students are encouraged to get COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots, but they are not required by Maine's community colleges.

Do you need more information about Summer Academy?
The Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce manages short-term training programs for Maine's community colleges. Launched in 2021, the Alfond Center will train 24,000 Mainers in four years through pre-hire training programs for underemployed individuals, professional development for frontline incumbent workers, and scholarships for students to continue their training in certificate and degree programs. These initiatives are possible through the generous support of the Harold Alfond Foundation, Maine Quality Centers, Ascendium, and the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan.
