ADV 105 Intro to Sea Kayak : This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of paddle sports and will focus on sea kayak and lake kayak safety. Students will learn the basics of boat design, basic paddling skills and safety considerations for paddling on fresh- and salt-water environments. The course will include a kayak safety rescue clinic as well as basic waterway navigation. This course is a pre-requisite for the sea kayak guide course. Maintaining a reasonable level of physical fitness and enthusiasm for the outdoors is essential. Badge and 3 credits awarded upon successful completion.
Camp Craft Outdoor Adventure: This is a one night camp out at the outdoor classroom that will consist of camps set up, tear down, food prep, safety, etc. Students will spend the night in tents. Badge awarded for completion.
High and Low Ropes: This will be a two-evening after kayaking adventure utilizing our low and high ropes courses to build self-esteem, self-efficacy, teamwork, and leadership. Badge awarded for completion.

The Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine’s Workforce coordinates all short-term workforce training programs for Maine’s community colleges, working closely with business and industry leaders statewide. Launched in 2021, the Alfond Center served over 26,000 Mainers in thirty months. A new, historic gift of $75.5 million from the Harold Alfond Foundation in June 2024 will enable the Center to train an additional 70,505 Mainers by 2030, significantly impacting Maine’s workforce and economy through strategic private and public partnerships.
