ON-CAMPUS WORKFORCE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Summer Academy offers Mainers affiliated with JMG the opportunity to gain hands-on, in-demand skills through free short-term training programs designed to lead directly to employment. Hosted on-campus at Maine’s community colleges, these immersive programs provide real-world experience in fields like healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, welding, and technology.

 

Programs start in June and July, giving students the chance to earn industry-recognized credentials before the fall. Many programs connect students directly with employers, offering interviews and job placement opportunities upon completion. Some campuses—including Central Maine, Eastern Maine, Southern Maine, and Washington County Community Colleges—also offer free lodging on a first-come, first-served basis. Students can choose to stay on campus for a full college-life experience or commute from home.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Southern Maine Community College and The Cedars Portland have partnered to offer a Certified Nursing Assistant Course.  The course includes classroom instruction and clinical experience at The Cedars.  Students may be eligible for job placement after completing the course.

Commercial Drivers License (CDL)

Eastern Maine Community College is offering a 160-hour Class A CDL program which will provide students with hands-on training to operate tractor trailers on the road and at pick-up and delivery points.  This training will prepare students to sit for the CDL exam and begin a lucrative career in the transportation industry.

Exploring Aquaculture Careers

The objective of this program is to raise awareness of careers within aquaculture, and pathways toward these careers.  Students will visit a range of aquaculture operations and become familiar with different roles and responsibilities.  They may include visiting shellfish, algae and fin fish hatcheries, land-based recirculating aquaculture operations, marine-based fin fish and shellfish operations, processing facilities, and research facilities.

Fiber Optic Technician

This 120-hour program covers the principles of installing, testing, and maintaining FTTx networks properly.  Students will build and develop the skills required to become fiber optic technicians by covering the various methods of splicing, terminating, testing, and commissioning fiber optic cable.  After successfully completing this course, students will have the skills necessary to become FBA-Certified Fiber Optic Technicians.

Foundations of Machining

Foundations of Machining Training covers the foundational skills that an individual will need to be successful as they transition into a machining role in a manufacturing setting.  This four-week training course will provide both classroom and hands-on machine time to learn how to safely operate mills and lathes.

New Cook Bootcamp

The New Cook Bootcamp at York County Community College is an 8-day accelerated training that will get you ready for a fast-paced career as a line cook.  The training includes ServSafe Certification as well as an overview of essential skills you will need as you begin your career.  Opportunities to participate in job fairs at the completion of the training will be made available to those who are not currently employed in the industry.

Outdoor Leadership

Maine’s outdoor environment is the ideal location to study Outdoor Leadership! The program was created in response to the increasing demand for qualified, trained outdoor specialists in the Outdoor Recreation industry.  Learn the basics and safety of paddle sports in Intro to Sea Kayak, participate in a one night camp out in Camp Craft Outdoor Adventure, and build teamwork and leadership skills in the High and Low Ropes courses.

Phlebotomy (SMCC)

This exciting collaboration between MaineHealth/NorDx & SMCC. Students will participate in 2 weeks of classroom learning.  Students that successfully complete the classroom training will be able to apply for a position with NorDx and will be guaranteed an interview.  If hired, students will move directly into the clinical portion of the program.  Clinical assignments will be Monday-Friday at varying times. Assignments will be at a MaineHealth hospital site or a Patient Service Center.

The cost of training is covered 100%!

If you participate in one of our in-person trainings at Eastern Maine Community College, Washington County Community College, Central Maine Community College, or Southern Maine Community College, we'll also cover dorms (limited availability; offered on a first-come, first-served basis).  

The choice to commute is yours!  You are able to have a vehicle on campus if you would like to stay in the dorms.  However, if you have reliable transportation and would like to commute back and forth, you are able to do so. 

Summer Academy training is free if:

You live in Maine.

You will graduate from high school (or earn a HiSET) in 2025 OR you're currently 18-24.

 

For students participating in in-person training, Maine law requires that all students born after 1956 who are enrolled full or part-time must be immunized against:

  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Diphtheria/Tetanus 

 

Each program varies.  Check the program page for the start date and schedule.

Our registration period is open through April 30th.  It is vital that you let us know you want to attend!  

You will receive an email confirmation from us when you register and will receive various communications about the program, housing, and other details between now and when the program starts.

The Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine’s Workforce coordinates all short-term workforce training programs for Maine’s community colleges, working closely with business and industry leaders statewide. Launched in 2021, the Alfond Center served over 26,000 Mainers in thirty months. A new, historic gift of $75.5 million from the Harold Alfond Foundation in June 2024 will enable the Center to train an additional 70,505 Mainers by 2030, significantly impacting Maine’s workforce and economy through strategic private and public partnerships.
